Italian culture

Italian culture

Italy is considered the birthplace of Western civilization and a cultural
superpower. Italy was home to many well-known and influential
civilizations, including the Etruscans, Samnites and the Romans, while
also hosting colonies from important foreign civilizations like
the Phoenicians and Greeks, whose influence and culture had a large
impact through the peninsula. The Greek ruins in southern Italy are
perhaps the most spectacular and best preserved anywhere.
The famous elements of Italian culture are its art, music, style, and
iconic food.                                                                                                    The country boasts several world-famous cities. Rome was the ancient
capital of the Roman Empire and seat of the Pope of the Catholic
Church. Florence was the heart of the Renaissance, a period of great
achievements in the arts at the end of the Middle Ages. Other
important cities include Turin, which used to be the capital of Italy, and
is now one of the world's great centers of automobile
engineering. Milan is the industrial, financial and fashion capital of
Italy. Venice, with its intricate canal system, attracts tourists from all
over the world especially during the Venetian Carnival and
the Biennale.

Natale in Italia - Christmas in Italy

Informazioni

Info
The word “Natale” comes from the latin word “natalis”.
The popular sentences for this event are : Merry Christams or Happy Christmas.
The crib tradition comes from Italy. The first crib - with live people- in our country was prepared by Saint Francesco d’Assisi in Greccio in 1223. But some scenes of cribs were in Naples in 1025.
About the Christmas tree , a custom from the north Europe, we had the first one in Italy in 1991 in Gubbio. It was 650 metres high with 700 lights. It was in  the World Guiness as the highest Christmas tree.
An Italian character is the bagpiper  a man dressed like a shepherd with a bag pipe that comes from the mountain playing Christmas carols. This custom goes back to XIX century and is typical in the south of Italy.
Another character is the “Ephifany” .  She is like an old witch with a broom that takes presents to kids on 6 January , the day of “Epifany”. She  takes a stocking with sweets to good kids but only coal to bad kids.
It is a popular rhyme:
Epifany comes at night
She has old shoes
A Roman hat
Hurray Epifany
The typical Christmas dessert is “panettone”, a sweet with  raisin from Milano but popular everywhere in Italy.  This dessert dates back to XXII century.

Easter in Italy

         EASTER IN ITALY

La Pasqua in Italia

Pasqua è la principale solennità del cristianesimo. Essa

And now in English!

Easter Day in Italy is a national holiday that
commemorates Jesus Christ’s resurrection from death, as
written in the Christian bible. The Easter date is set around
the time of the March Equinox.
